3 Days in Lamu

Day 1

Old Town Heritage & Culture

Lamu Old Town

Morning. Start your journey in the heart of Lamu Old Town, where the narrow, labyrinthine alleys have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Begin your morning with a visit to the Lamu Museum, which provides an essential historical context for the island’s Swahili, Arab, and Portuguese influences. As you wander, look up to admire the intricate carved wooden doors that define the local aesthetic. Make sure to stop by the Donkey Sanctuary to witness the island's primary mode of transport in action. It is best to arrive early before the midday heat settles into the stone corridors.

Lamu Fort

Afternoon. After a morning of history, head toward the massive stone walls of Lamu Fort, which stands as a silent sentinel over the town square. Spend time exploring the various exhibits inside that detail the maritime history of the archipelago. Afterward, walk toward the Pwani Mosque, one of the oldest in the region, to appreciate its minimalist and elegant architecture. If you have the energy, wander through the bustling central market nearby to see local life in full swing. Keep your camera ready, as the interplay of light and shadow in these stone passages is world-class.

Lamu Old Town

Evening. As the sun begins to dip, make your way to the waterfront for a traditional dhow sailing experience. Watching the sunset from the water offers a completely different perspective of the island's skyline. Once back on land, head to a rooftop terrace for a refreshing drink while the call to prayer echoes across the town. End your day by wandering back through the quiet, lantern-lit streets. The atmosphere at night is magical and feels like stepping back in time.

Day 2

Island Hopping & Ancient Ruins

Morning. Today is dedicated to exploring the surrounding islands, so charter a local boat early to head toward the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island. These 15th-century remains of a Swahili trading town offer a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the past, set amidst a dense mangrove forest. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the path to the ruins can be slightly uneven. It is highly recommended to hire a local guide who can explain the significance of the Great Mosque and the pillar tomb. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the island heat can be intense.

Manda Island

Afternoon. After your historical excursion, have your boat captain take you to a secluded spot on Manda Island for a picnic or a quiet swim. The waters here are crystal clear and significantly quieter than the main beaches. Spend your afternoon relaxing under the shade of the mangroves, listening to the gentle lapping of the Indian Ocean against the shore. It is the perfect antidote to the bustle of the Old Town. Plan to head back toward the main island by late afternoon to catch the changing colors of the tide.

Shela Village

Evening. Return to the main island and transition your evening toward the serene vibe of Shela Village. Walk along the promenade as the village residents prepare for the evening. Find a comfortable spot to watch the dhows returning to the harbor. The evening air here is cooler and carries the scent of jasmine and sea salt. It is the perfect time to reflect on the day's discoveries before heading to dinner.

Day 3

Beach Bliss & Coastal Relaxation

Shela Beach

Morning. Dedicate your final day to the pristine sands of Shela Beach, which stretches for miles along the eastern coast. This is arguably the most beautiful beach in Kenya, known for its soft white sand and lack of crowds. Bring a good book and find a spot under a palm-frond umbrella to simply soak in the tranquility. If you feel active, you can walk the entire length of the beach down to the dunes. It is best to hit the sand early in the morning to secure a prime spot before the sun reaches its peak.

Shela Village

Afternoon. Stay in the Shela area for a leisurely lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the narrow, sandy paths of the village itself. Unlike the stone town, Shela has a more laid-back, bohemian atmosphere with beautiful villas and lush gardens. Visit some of the local art galleries or small boutiques that feature hand-woven textiles and traditional jewelry. It is a great place to pick up a unique souvenir that supports local artisans. You’ll find that the pace of life here is incredibly slow and infectious.

Shela Beach

Evening. For your final evening, treat yourself to a sunset dinner at one of the iconic beachfront establishments. Watching the moon rise over the Indian Ocean while enjoying fresh local seafood is the ultimate Lamu experience. Take a slow walk back along the beach under the stars, listening to the rhythm of the waves. It is a peaceful conclusion to an unforgettable trip. Ensure you have your flashlight, as the paths between the beach and the village can get quite dark.
