3 Days in Portland

Day 1

Gardens and Heights

Washington Park

Morning. Start your Portland adventure by heading straight to Washington Park, the city's crown jewel of green space. Spend your first hour wandering through the International Rose Test Garden, where thousands of blooms create a sensory explosion against the backdrop of the city skyline. Afterward, take a short, peaceful walk over to the Portland Japanese Garden, widely regarded as one of the most authentic outside of Japan. Arrive right when they open at 10:00 AM to beat the crowds and enjoy the tranquil koi ponds in silence. From there, take the free park shuttle or a quick rideshare to head toward the historic Pittock Mansion.

NW 23rd Avenue

Afternoon. After soaking in the views from Pittock Mansion, descend into the trendy Northwest District to explore the boutiques along NW 23rd Avenue. Grab a quick bite and then head toward the massive Forest Park, which offers miles of forested trails right within city limits. If you prefer something more curated, head back toward the Pearl District to visit the legendary Powell's City of Books. It occupies an entire city block and is a labyrinth of new and used titles that you could easily get lost in for hours. Be sure to grab a map at the information desk so you don't miss the rare book room on the top floor.

Willamette River

Evening. As the sun sets, walk over to the nearby riverfront to see the lights reflecting off the Willamette River. Make your way toward the bustling Pearl District for a sophisticated dinner, perhaps choosing a spot that highlights local Northwest ingredients. After dinner, walk a few blocks to check out the nightlife or grab a nightcap at a local craft brewery. The area is very walkable, making it easy to hop between cozy pubs and upscale cocktail bars. End your night by taking a short stroll along the North Park Blocks to appreciate the city's urban planning.

Day 2

Culture and Bridges

Old Town Chinatown

Morning. Begin your day in Old Town Chinatown by visiting the serene Lan Su Chinese Garden, a walled oasis that feels worlds away from the city noise. Spend about an hour here admiring the intricate rock formations and traditional architecture before grabbing a tea at the garden's own tea house. Once you've finished, walk a few blocks to the nearby Saturday Market area, even if it's a weekday, to see the historic storefronts and the iconic Skidmore Fountain. It is a great area to photograph the blend of historic cast-iron buildings and modern street life. Finally, head toward the waterfront to catch a glimpse of the Steel Bridge.

Afternoon. Cross the river to the Eastside, where the vibe shifts to industrial-chic and creative. Spend your afternoon at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, which offers interactive exhibits that are perfect for all ages. After soaking up some science, walk along the Eastbank Esplanade for stunning views of the downtown skyline across the water. If you have time, venture slightly further east to the Central Eastside Industrial District, which is home to some of the city's most innovative food carts and micro-distilleries. It is the perfect place to grab a casual afternoon snack from a local food pod.

St. Johns

Evening. For your evening, head north to the St. Johns neighborhood, famous for its small-town feel and the magnificent St. Johns Bridge. Walk across the bridge during the golden hour to snap photos of the Gothic-style towers and the lush surrounding forest. Once you've crossed, explore the charming downtown strip of St. Johns, which features independent cinemas and local pubs. This area is much quieter than downtown and offers a great glimpse into the local lifestyle. Conclude your night with a hearty meal at one of the neighborhood's highly-rated eateries before heading back.

Day 3

Vibrant Neighborhoods

Hawthorne District

Morning. Start your final day in the Hawthorne District, a neighborhood known for its eclectic shops, vintage clothing stores, and quirky spirit. Grab a coffee and spend the morning window-shopping along SE Hawthorne Boulevard, where you'll find everything from record stores to independent bookstores. It’s a great place to pick up unique souvenirs that you won't find anywhere else. After exploring the boulevard, head over to Mount Tabor Park to hike to the top of an extinct volcanic cinder cone. The view from the summit provides a panoramic perspective of the entire city and the distant peaks of the Cascade Range.

Belmont

Afternoon. Head over to the Belmont neighborhood for a relaxed lunch at one of the many sidewalk cafes. After eating, make your way to the nearby Laurelhurst Park, a beautiful public park with a large pond and plenty of space to lounge under the trees. It’s a favorite spot for locals to walk their dogs and enjoy a picnic. If you have extra time, visit the nearby Clinton Street Theater, one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in the city, to check if they have a matinee or a classic film showing. The area is incredibly charming and offers a slower pace of life.

Evening. End your trip by exploring the Division Street corridor, which has transformed into one of the city's premier dining destinations. Spend your final evening hopping between the various wine bars and high-end restaurants that line the street. It is the perfect place to reflect on your trip while enjoying some of the best culinary offerings in the Pacific Northwest. Before you leave, make sure to stop by a local bakery or confectionery for a treat to take home. The atmosphere on Division is vibrant, welcoming, and captures the true essence of modern Portland.
