3 Days in Pucon

Day 1

Volcano and Town Center

Villarrica Volcano

Morning. Start your Pucón adventure by meeting your mountain guide at the base of the Villarrica Volcano, one of South America's most active peaks. You will spend the morning trekking up the volcanic slopes, navigating through snowfields and rocky terrain to reach the crater rim. The panoramic views of the surrounding Andes and the smoking crater are truly unforgettable, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunblock. After descending, head back toward the town center to stroll through the Plaza de Armas de Pucón. It is the perfect place to watch locals and tourists mingle under the shade of the native trees.

Afternoon. After a morning of intense activity, head down to Playa Grande to relax by the dark volcanic sands of Lake Villarrica. The beach is quite popular, so find a spot early if you plan on swimming in the crisp, cold waters. Spend a few hours walking along the shoreline or grabbing a cold drink at a nearby kiosk. From there, head to the main street, O'Higgins, to browse the local artisan shops. You will find plenty of handmade wooden crafts and wool textiles that make for perfect souvenirs of the Araucanía region.

Evening. Wind down your first day by exploring the culinary scene on the main strip. Start with a drink at a local bar before heading to dinner to refuel with some of the best grilled meat in the south. The atmosphere in Pucón at night is energetic, with plenty of travelers sharing stories from their day's excursions. Finish your evening with a decadent dessert at a nearby cafe to satisfy your sweet tooth. It is the perfect way to cap off a day of high-altitude thrills.

Day 2

Nature and Thermal Waters

Ojos del Caburgua

Morning. Escape the town and head deep into the forest to explore the stunning Ojos del Caburgua. These vibrant blue waterfalls are fed by underground rivers and offer some of the most photogenic scenery in the area. Spend your morning walking the well-maintained trails that loop around the falls, taking time to capture the mist rising from the pools. It is a relatively easy walk, making it accessible for all fitness levels. Afterward, continue your drive toward the pristine shores of Lago Caburgua for a quick picnic by the water.

Termas Geométricas

Afternoon. Spend your afternoon soaking in the famous Termas Geométricas, an architectural masterpiece tucked into a deep canyon. The complex features numerous slate-stone pools of varying temperatures connected by bright red wooden boardwalks. It is an incredibly relaxing experience, surrounded by lush native vegetation and cascading waterfalls. Make sure to bring a towel and flip-flops, as you will be walking between the pools frequently. Arriving in the late afternoon allows you to enjoy the thermal waters as the light begins to fade, creating a magical atmosphere.

Evening. Return to Pucón feeling refreshed and ready for a hearty dinner. Head to one of the town's acclaimed seafood restaurants to try the local trout, which is a regional specialty. The dining scene here is quite relaxed, so you can easily find a table without a reservation on most weeknights. After dinner, take a leisurely walk back toward your accommodation, enjoying the cool mountain air. The town is very safe and well-lit, making for a pleasant stroll at night.

Day 3

Highland Peaks and Valleys

Parque Nacional Huerquehue

Morning. Dedicate your final day to the breathtaking beauty of Parque Nacional Huerquehue. This park is famous for its ancient Araucaria trees and high-altitude alpine lakes like Lago Chico and Lago Toro. The hike is challenging but rewarding, taking you through dense forests and up steep switchbacks to reach the viewpoints. Be sure to arrive at the park entrance early in the morning to beat the crowds and secure your spot on the trail. Pack a sturdy pair of hiking boots, as the terrain can be quite muddy depending on the recent weather.

Afternoon. After completing the descent from the mountains, spend your afternoon visiting the lesser-known Saltos del Saltillo. These waterfalls offer a more secluded experience than the more popular attractions near the town center. It is a great spot to sit quietly and reflect on your trip while listening to the roar of the water. If you have time, drive through the surrounding rural valleys to see the traditional wooden farmhouses and rolling green hills. This area provides a glimpse into the slower, more traditional pace of life in the Araucanía region.

Ecole

Evening. For your final evening, treat yourself to a memorable dinner at a restaurant that highlights local, organic ingredients. Spend your last few hours in Pucón reflecting on your adventures over a glass of Chilean Carmenere. The town has a wonderful way of making you feel like a local, even if you are just passing through. Before heading to bed, walk one last time through the quiet streets to appreciate the charm of the mountain architecture. It is a bittersweet end to a trip packed with natural wonders.
