3 Days in Samarkand

Day 1

The Heart of the Silk Road

Registan

Morning. Start your journey at the Registan, the city's most iconic square, arriving early at 8:00 AM to beat the tour buses and enjoy the morning light hitting the intricate tilework. Spend at least two hours wandering through the three majestic madrasas: Ulugbek, Tilya-Kori, and Sher-Dor. Take your time to climb the minaret of the Ulugbek Madrasah for a unique perspective of the square from above. Afterward, walk a short distance north to the massive Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. The scale of the portal is truly humbling, so bring your wide-angle lens for the best photos.

Siab Bazaar

Afternoon. Just steps away from the mosque, dive headlong into the chaos and color of the Siab Bazaar. This is the place to buy local delicacies like Samarkand halva, dried fruits, and the famous circular Samarkand non bread, which is said to stay fresh for weeks. After sampling the goods, walk up the hill to the Hazrat Khizr Mosque, a beautiful structure that offers a serene atmosphere and a great view looking back over the bazaar. It is the perfect spot for a quiet moment of reflection before heading to the nearby Mausoleum of Saint Daniel. The long, unique tomb is surrounded by a peaceful garden and a river, providing a cool retreat from the afternoon sun.

Gur-e-Amir

Evening. As the sun begins to set, make your way toward the Gur-e-Amir, the final resting place of the conqueror Timur. The golden interior, illuminated at night, is one of the most spectacular sights in all of Central Asia. Spend your evening walking the perimeter of the mausoleum to see the dome glowing against the dark sky. It is a short walk from here to the modern center, where you can find a comfortable spot to reflect on the day. End your night with a hearty meal at a nearby restaurant to soak in the atmosphere of the city after dark.

Day 2

Ancient History & Craftsmanship

Afrosiyob Museum

Morning. Begin your day at the Afrosiyob Museum, located on the northern edge of the city on the site of the ancient city of Samarkand. The museum houses the famous 7th-century Sogdian wall paintings, which provide a fascinating glimpse into the city's pre-Islamic history. After absorbing the history, take a short taxi ride to the Ulugbek Observatory, built in the 15th century by the astronomer-king himself. You can still see the massive remains of the sextant used to map the stars with incredible precision. It is a quiet, contemplative site that feels far removed from the bustle of the city center.

Afternoon. Travel to the outskirts of the city to visit the Konigil Paper Mill, a peaceful oasis located in a lush valley. Here, you can watch artisans create traditional Samarkand paper using mulberry bark, a process that has remained unchanged for centuries. The setting is very relaxing, with water wheels and plenty of greenery, making it an ideal place to spend a slow afternoon. You can even purchase unique handmade souvenirs directly from the source. Make sure to try the local tea served in the garden before heading back toward the city proper.

Shah-i-Zinda

Evening. Return to the city and head straight for the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, which is arguably the most beautiful architectural site in the city. The narrow corridor of mausoleums features some of the most vibrant and well-preserved majolica tiles in the world. Visiting in the late afternoon allows you to see the colors shift as the sun sets, creating a magical, glowing effect on the blue tiles. It is a photographer's dream and a perfect final major landmark to explore. Spend your last evening in the area enjoying a traditional meal at a nearby garden restaurant.

Day 3

Samarkand Slow Living

Mausoleum of Ishrat Khana

Morning. Spend your final morning exploring the quiet residential streets near the old city, where you can find smaller, hidden shrines and local workshops. Visit the Mausoleum of Ishrat Khana, a hauntingly beautiful ruin that offers a glimpse into the architectural grandeur of the Timurid era. The site is less frequented by tourists, allowing for a more intimate experience. Afterward, wander through the local neighborhoods to observe the daily life of Samarkand residents. Stop at a local bakery to see the traditional bread ovens in action before enjoying a leisurely brunch.

University Boulevard

Afternoon. Head to the area around the University Boulevard, which is lined with tall, ancient trees and historic buildings from the Russian colonial period. This part of the city offers a completely different aesthetic compared to the medieval sites, with wide avenues and grand facades. Spend time visiting the local art galleries or simply enjoying a coffee at one of the sidewalk cafes. It is a great place to people-watch and soak in the modern vibe of the city. If you have time, visit the nearby Museum of History and Culture of Uzbekistan for a broader perspective on the region.

Registan

Evening. Conclude your trip with a stroll through the park areas surrounding the Registan to see the monuments illuminated one last time. The city takes on a different character at night, with locals gathering in the squares and parks to socialize. Find a rooftop terrace nearby to enjoy a final dinner while looking out over the illuminated domes of the city. It is the perfect way to bid farewell to the Silk Road's most enchanting city. Reflect on your journey while enjoying the cool evening air and the sounds of the city.
